1844 long cross-written entire from Spring Grove to Yorkshire bearing various manuscript rate markings, 'crown' framed oval CAPE OF GOOD HOPE date stamp, re-directed upon arrival to "Post Office, Filey" whose date stamp appears above, reverse with straight-line SHIP LETTER handstamp, red entry cds and green 'HULL' date stamp.
1845 (23/9) outer letter sheet addresed “To the Secretaries of the Wesleyan Missions/ at the Centenary Hall and Mission House, Bishopsgate” London rated “1/-“ (deleted) and re-rated “2” showing a good strike of the very rare CARRIACOU straight-line handstamp in brownish ink, the revrse with two arriva datestamps (20.10). An exceptionally rare marking with three dated in 1842 and this example being the latest recorded and only one in 1845. Ex Danforth Walker and Hackmey, RPS Cert The London proof book shows this marking as CARRIACOU/ SHIP LETTER although no examples with the ship letter portio have ever been found, probably as it was considered to be more useful purely as a normal town name marking.
1845 (29th September) long family letter from the ‘Holland’ correspondence, full of domestic information from a father in Salem, North Carolina to his son, a missionary in Jamaica, bearing blue despatch cds and PAID handstamp, charged ”12” to Philadelphia (which consisted of 10c for over 300 miles and incorrectly 2 cents Ship). Landed with framed Montego Bay/ SHIP LETTER handstamp, charge “1/-“ to May Hill via Spanish Town. Ex Hugh Wood and Booth.
1845 (4th June) thick entire from Columbia, South Carolina, USA via Philadelphia via private ship, rated “1/6” for a double Ship Letter rate plus inland postage from St Ann’s to Mandeville of 2d. for a total charge of “1/8”, showing the only recorded ‘SHIP LETTER/ St ANNS’ handstamp that is not recorded in foster but in Proud SL1.
